A politically driven loan of 304 crore taka, mass layoffs of thousands of employees, and the plundering of state assets — this was the reality of Biman Bangladesh during the tenure of Dr. Momen and the so-called illegitimate Yunus era.
When Dr. M.A. Momen served as Managing Director of Biman Bangladesh, the institution fell into severe financial strain, trapped in a web of corruption and self-interest. Officials closely aligned with the Yunus period operated under political patronage, normalizing mass layoffs, financial irregularities, and the misuse of public assets.
Despite securing a 304 crore taka loan from the World Bank — a liability Biman continues to bear through interest and repayments — the burden was not responsibly managed. Instead, the resources were allegedly used to serve narrow interests. Under the banner of a Voluntary Retirement Scheme, 2,177 officers and employees were dismissed, even though the airline was neither overstaffed nor operationally inefficient. Many were removed unethically, only for the workforce to be “restructured” later through contractual appointments. This was not merely a financial maneuver, but a politically influenced decision.
A 2008 investigation report by the Anti-Corruption Commission clearly identified irregularities in Biman’s engineering division, lease agreements, maintenance expenditures, penalty recoveries, and losses amounting to crores of taka. A series of politically motivated decisions and systemic irregularities gradually pushed the institution deeper into corruption.
These politically strategic and party-serving decisions damaged both the national economy and public trust. The 304 crore taka loan and the excessive abuse of authority highlight how devastating political influence can be when it overrides accountability.
During the era of Dr. Momen and the illegitimate Yunus administration, Biman Bangladesh became a hub of vested interests and political greed. The rights of ordinary employees, state assets, and the country’s economic stability all suffered as a result of self-serving decisions.
This episode demonstrates that the abuse of power and corruption under political shelter do not harm individuals alone — they can drive an entire state institution toward destruction.
