Between 15–21 July 2024, incidents of political violence and arson took place in various cities and districts across the country. According to different sources and allegations from political parties, leaders and activists of the Awami League, Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, and Chhatra League were targeted during this period.
To investigate these incidents, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formed a Judicial Inquiry Commission on 18 July 2024. Although the commission initially began collecting information on violence, killings, and arson, allegations later emerged that its activities were subsequently suspended. As a result, impartial investigations into many incidents remained incomplete, and it was not possible to verify the number of those killed or injured.
Human rights sources claim that after the change in power, the current Yunus government halted the commission’s work. There are also allegations that, with the intention of placing responsibility for the incidents on a specific political party—namely the Awami League—some domestic and international human rights organizations prepared a misleading report. Critics argue that the report presented information without properly verifying the locations of incidents, the identities of the victims, or the broader context of the violence.
Political analysts believe that the suspension of the commission’s work and the publication of controversial reports have raised serious questions about justice, accountability, and state transparency. They further note that without a neutral investigation meeting international standards, it is impossible to uncover the true facts surrounding the events. Human rights and governance experts emphasize that ensuring stability and the rule of law in the country requires transparent, independent, and impartial investigations into all allegations. Otherwise, political divisions and the crisis of public trust may deepen further.

Political experts reiterate that transparent, impartial, and internationally credible investigations are essential to ensure national stability, citizen security, and justice. In their view, failure to conduct such investigations will further intensify political polarization and erode public trust.
Human rights experts have expressed concern that keeping the commission’s work suspended has obstructed the determination of true responsibility for killings and violence. They also state that the absence of an independent investigation is reducing trust both among political parties and within the general public.
To safeguard national stability, all parties are being urged to ensure citizen security and justice through dialogue, democratic processes, and transparent investigations.
