Luxury Travel at the Public’s Expense — We Demand Answers on Yunus’s London Trip

On June 9, 2025, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, along with his entourage, departed on an official visit to the United Kingdom. However, the extravagance surrounding this trip, now exposed, is not only condemnable but a shameful example of blatant misuse of public funds.

Investigative reports reveal that 37 rooms were booked for four nights at one of London’s most luxurious hotels, The Dorchester. The total bill for this stay was £210,325—or approximately BDT 35 million (calculated at £1 = BDT 166). The daily rent for the Chief Advisor’s room alone was £6,045—amounting to nearly BDT 4 million in total! Such royal luxury—paid for by the people?

The pressing question is: What benefit did Bangladesh gain from this visit? There were no bilateral meetings, no trade agreements, and no diplomatic achievements. Instead, Dr. Yunus received a personal award from the British royal family and held a secret meeting with BNP leader Tarique Rahman.

Even more shocking is that despite Bangladesh’s national airline operating direct flights to London, the delegation traveled via Emirates Airlines in First and Business Class—at significantly higher cost. Why?

The people want answers: Whose budget funded this extravagant trip? Is money from the national treasury being used for collecting personal awards and holding covert political meetings?

We demand that the government investigate this unjustifiable expenditure and hold those responsible accountable. At a time when ordinary citizens are struggling to afford daily necessities, such opulence at the expense of the state is utterly unacceptable.
