BNP Engulfed in Nationwide Turf Wars and Extortion Violence After Regime Change Clashes in 25 Districts

Following the regime change sparked by the anti-discrimination student movement (BAISHA), the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has become embroiled in widespread violence across the country. Turf wars over extortion and territorial dominance have led to bloody clashes in at least 25 districts, resulting in numerous injuries and fatalities among party members due to infighting.

Chattogram has been the epicenter, witnessing at least 13 deaths caused by disputes over territorial control and extortion. Clashes erupted in multiple areas, leaving local residents in a constant state of fear.

  • On September 20, in Old Chandgaon, Chattogram city, BNP’s youth wing members clashed over control of a field, killing Jubayer Uddin Babu. Several individuals, including Nazim Uddin, the convenor of the local volunteer wing, were arrested.
  • October 11, in the Bayezid Bostami area, BNP activist Md. Imon was murdered in a feud over dominance. Three local leaders, including a former JCD (student wing) joint secretary and leaders from the volunteer and farmers’ wings, were expelled.
  • March 21, a clash over Eid greeting banners in Kusumbagh led to the fatal shooting of Jihadur Rahman Jihad, a youth activist. Four arrests have been made.
  • January 13, in Mirsarai, one BNP activist, Md. Munna, was killed in a fight over extortion at a trade fair. 20 individuals, including youth wing leaders, were named in a case.
  • March 26, another activist, Zaved Hossain, was hacked to death in Baraiyarhat due to internal factional violence.
  • February 1, a BNP activist was murdered in Dantmara, Fatikchhari.
  • March 18, another youth activist, Mohammad Ramzan Ali, was stabbed to death in a separate factional clash in the same union.
  • January 2, labor leader Mir Arman was hacked to death in Sitakunda. His family accuses followers of the former local Jubo Dal president.
  • February 9, Mohammad Masud was killed over control of sand and brick trade in Jungle Salimpur.
  • February 16, Ram Das was murdered over sand extraction rights in Barabkund. His body was recovered from the sea by Coast Guard officers.
  • March 26, Mohammad Nasir, an organizer of the Farmers’ Wing, was killed. Four suspects from the Youth and Volunteer wings were arrested.
  • In Sandwip, BNP activist Ayub Jahangir was abducted from his home and beaten to death. The family blames local BNP leader Shahabuddin Suman.
  • March 15, Korm Uddin Jitu was fatally stabbed in Amirhat, Raozan. His wife later filed a case against 16 individuals.

Outside of Chattogram:

  • February 1, in Nangalkot, Comilla, Selim Uddin Bhuiyan was killed in a clash between rival BNP factions over extortion and power struggles involving two central BNP leaders.
  • April 7, in Lakshmipur’s Raipur upazila, BNP leader Saiz Uddin Dewan was killed in a clash over control of fish markets and bazaars.
  • Bogura witnessed three BNP members killed over transport business disputes.
  • On September 10, youth leader Mizanur Rahman was killed in an attack led by suspended local leader Suman Ahmed Bipul. The next morning, Bipul’s cousin was killed in retaliation.
  • February 7, youth leader Rashedul Islam died from injuries sustained during an intra-party attack.
  • In Rajshahi, BNP infighting at Iftar events led to:
  • March 11, the killing of Ganiul Islam, brother of a former local BNP president in Tanore.
  • March 27, the death of Nekchar Ali during another Iftar event clash in Chanduria.
  • March 7, rickshaw-puller Golam Hossain was killed in a political turf war involving a female BNP leader and a former youth leader.
  • Khulna division saw 8 BNP activists killed
  • February 11, Shaukat Hossain died from injuries in Bagerhat’s Kachua due to party committee disputes.
  • November 9, youth leader Piyal Hasan was hacked and bombed in Jashore’s Jhikargacha over business rivalry.
  • March 8, Rafiqul Islam Rafiq was killed in Chuadanga during a clash over relief goods.
  • November 1, Sultan Hossain succumbed to injuries from an earlier factional fight in Damurhuda.
  • February 11, BNP activist Mosharraf Hossain was killed in Harinakunda over dominance disputes.
  • December 19, Shariful Islam was killed in a brawl between a former and current UP member in Magura.
  • August 30, Wazed Ali was killed in Magura’s Dephulia market. Later, on *April 12, youth leader Miran Mallik also died from related injuries.
  • In Kishoreganj, BNP Union president Abul Hasan Ratan was killed over dominance disputes.
  • March 22, student leader Ashik Khan was killed in a school committee feud.
  • Mymensingh, August 7: two youth leaders were killed in Gafargaon over bus stand control.
  • September 11, in Narail, two brothers—BNP activists Miran and Zia Sheikh—were killed due to a long-standing local rivalry. 33 individuals, including youth wing leader Mahmud Khan, were sued.
  • November 18, in Bhola, youth leader Toyobur Rahman died from injuries after an extortion-related clash between two local BNP factions.
  • March 11, in Monpura, Union JCD leader Rashed was killed in a fight between supporters of former MP Nazim Uddin and central youth wing leader Nurul Islam Nayan.
  • September 10, in Sherpur, BNP supporters Ashraful Alam Mizan and Ariful Islam Shrabon were killed.
  • February 25, local BNP leader Zakaria Badol was hacked to death in Kamaria.
  • In Narayanganj, March 18, a turf war in the rehabilitation center of Chanpara left BNP youth activist Hasibur Rahman dead.
  • February 7, volunteer leader Mamun Hossain was shot dead in Fatullah.
  • December 24, student leader Pavel Mia was killed by local BNP figures in Rupganj.
  • December 9, student leader Lavlu Ahmed was killed in Manikganj’s Ghior during a clash over extortion. District BNP expelled senior leader Monowar Hossain following the incident.
    Additionally, one BNP activist has been killed in each of the following districts due to internal violence and extortion feuds: Sylhet, Sirajganj, Madaripur, Gazipur, Jhenaidah, Rangpur, Faridpur, and Dhamrai (Dhaka).

Since the August 5 regime change, BNP factions across every district remain locked in violent confrontations over extortion and territorial control. These internal conflicts reflect a deeper collapse of party discipline and the militarization of BNP’s grassroots.⁩
